Well, well, well, now the truth comes out. My big-headed, spoiled brat of a friend doesn't think I have the kumquats to be queen.

Riley

"Bowled Over" is the thirteenth episode of the second season, and the fifty-third episode of The Replacements.

Synopsis[]

Riley and Abbey compete in the Kumquat Queen Beauty Pageant and Bowling Competition.

Plot[]

Abbey is now old enough to compete in the Kumquat Queen Beauty Pageant and Bowling Competition. Since Riley bowled a perfect game, she asks Riley to teach her how to bowl. She does not pay attention while Riley bowls, however, as she believes that the beauty portion would weed out any good bowlers. Feeling insulted, Riley gets Abbey to admit that she does not think Riley is good enough to be Kumquat Queen. Riley enters the pageant to prove that she is capable of being a beauty queen.

Dick becomes his daughter's beauty pageant coach, having watched every Kumquat Queen Beauty Pageant beforehand. He has Riley answer interview questions while tightrope-walking with a plate of Jell-O on her head.

Before the pageant, an old lady judge expresses her displeasure at Prince Cinnamon Boots, and she tells Riley that she will never vote for someone with a mule. Riley initially declines to replace the judge, but Todd has a bet with Buzz riding on her. Thanks to Fleemco, the judge gets an opportunity to pick out new robes for Supreme Court justices.

That night, Agent K misplaces her ticket. Shelton does not allow her to enter the pageant. Agent K spends the rest of the night coming up with increasingly elaborate ways to break in. Meanwhile, Riley meets the new judge: an old prospector. Riley shows off her new dress to Abbey, but the exact same dress somehow looks better on her friend.

In the interview portion, host Ace Palmero asks Abbey the definition of success (she simply responds, "me"), and he quizzes Riley about the three primary causes of the Russian Revolution. In the talent portion, Abbey juggles diamonds, while Riley does a dance routine with P.C.B. The prospector gives Riley an 11 out of 10, which helps her move into second place behind Abbey. Agent K finally breaks into the beauty pageant, only to realize that everyone went to the bowling alley for the bowling competition.

Abbey has a poor showing at the bowling competition. In the final frame, Abbey trips and throws her ball into the gutter. Abbey thanks Riley for checking to see if she was okay, and she apologizes for insulting Riley earlier. Riley accepts Abbey's apology, and she intentionally throws her ball into the gutter so Abbey can win the competition. Agent K makes it into the bowling alley, only to find the place empty.

Trivia[]

S2E12A scoreboard

The scoreboard.

  • After Agent K fails to burrow her way into the beauty pageant, she says "I knew I should've taken a left at Albuquerque" and munches a carrot, referencing one of Bugs Bunny's catchphrases.
  • A random karate instructor tells Riley to "sweep the leg," which is a reference to the ending of The Karate Kid
  • According to the scoreboard, Riley was leading 180-12, and there were two frames left to play. Under standard bowling rules, Abbey and Riley would have gotten second chances after their gutter balls, though Riley still would have won.
